EU needs to resolve issue of support for Ukraine promptly — US State Department
The statement came in response to a question about Hungary’s plans to block Ukraine European bid and also aid for the Kiev government
WASHINGTON, December 14. /TASS/. The US administration believes that the European Union should agree on next year’s financial support to Ukraine promptly, US Department of State Spokesperson Matthew Miller said.
"The United States and the EU have been resolute in standing with Ukraine. We believe now is the time to step up that support. It’s vital to our national security and that of our European partners. We appreciate the EU’s continued efforts to provide financial support to Ukraine and hope that the EU can quickly agree on funding for 2024 and beyond," he said.
The statement came in response to a question about Hungary’s plans to block Ukraine European bid and also aid for the Kiev government.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has told European Council President Charles Michel on Wednesday that he would not support the opening of EU accession talks with Ukraine. The Hungarian government believes that Ukraine is not yet ready for membership, and its accession will seriously harm interests of all members of the European community. The majority of Hungarian parliamentarians share this opinion.
Earlier, Orban said that he planned to block Brussels’ proposal to allocate 50 billion euro in financial aid to the Kiev government during the EU summit on December 14-15.
