Ukraine conflict could financially ruin Europe, benefit US economy — EU Parliament member
According to Thierry Mariani, the European Union will not withstand such a financial burden, given that 88 billion euros has already been expended, with another 70 billion expected to be spent until 2027
PARIS, December 13. /TASS/. The Ukraine conflict, in which Washington has dragged European countries, may cause irreparable financial damage to the European Union (EU), whereas the US will rake it in, kick-starting its economy, Thierry Mariani, a member of the European Parliament from France, said.
"Europe will be paying for years to reconstruct Ukraine, whereas the United States will make money on the war to restart its economy," he wrote on his X page (formerly known as Twitter).
Mariani attached a video to his post, in which he indicates that 60% of the $110 billion earmarked by the US for Ukraine was spent on American soil.
"Sitting 8,000 kilometers away from Ukraine, they have drawn the European Union into a crusade against Russia and China, leaving the Europeans to grapple by themselves with the repercussions on their territory. Today, American politicians are refusing to fund [Ukrainian President Vladimir] Zelensky, while American think tanks are saying that European countries should pay for Ukraine’s reconstruction on their own," the lawmaker said.
According to Mariani, the European Union will not withstand such a financial burden, given that 88 billion euros has already been expended, with another 70 billion expected to be spent until 2027, which does not include a variety of loans, so the total sum may come to 190 billion euros. After the end of hostilities, the post-war reconstruction could cost as much as 400 billion euros, which in the aggregate "will ruin the European Union."
"As you see, the United States is a weird friend. It has left Ukraine to pay in blood alone and Europe to pay the bills for its projects on our continent," he concluded.
