Conference of parties passes COP28 document calling for transition away from fossil fuels
The document does not contain the provision on the gradual phasing out of fossil fuels
DUBAI, December 13. /TASS/. The participants of the 28th Conference of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) have passed the final document on results of the first Global Stocktake focused on progress on the Paris Agreement. The parties approved the decision during the sixth plenary meeting, a TASS correspondent reported.
The document does not contain the provision on the gradual phasing out of fossil fuels. Instead, the key part of the agreement that includes measures on reduction of emissions, has points calling for a transition away from fossil fuels.
The previous draft of the COP28 final document stated the necessity to cut both consumption and production of fossil fuels. The lack of the provision on phasing out of them caused severe criticism by a number of delegations.
The 28th Conference of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change was to end on Tuesday, though due to differences regarding the statement on fossil fuels delegations continued working on the draft final document, which was only presented early on Wednesday.
