South Korea's parliament calls for halting potential Russia-DPRK arms trade
A lawmaker from the opposition Democratic Party of Korea did not support the resolution, his colleagues abstained
SEOUL, December 8. /TASS/. The South Korean National Assembly has adopted a resolution calling for a halt to the alleged arms trade between Russia and North Korea, the Yonhap news agency reported.
The document was proposed by Thae Yong-ho of the ruling People Power Party. It was supported by 138 MPs, 1 opposed and 13 abstained. Thae Yong-ho used to work at the North Korean embassy in the UK before defecting to South Korea. The resolution contains a general call to stop the arms trade and an appeal to Moscow "to faithfully implement United Nations Security Council sanctions against North Korea."
A lawmaker from the opposition Democratic Party of Korea did not support the resolution, his colleagues abstained. The South Korean parliament currently has a total of 298 seats.
A separate resolution on the conflict between the radical Palestinian Hamas movement and Israel was passed. The South Korean National Assembly condemned Hamas attacks on civilians, called for the release of hostages and an end to hostilities.
Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a commentary published on November 11 that Western countries' accusations of "illegal" military-technical cooperation between Russia and North Korea were unsubstantiated. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov previously dismissed Washington's claims that Pyongyang was providing military aid to Moscow as pure speculation.
