UK’s Urenco to supply enriched uranium to Ukraine until 2035
According to Energoatom, the current contract with Urenco expires in 2025
MOSCOW, November 29. /TASS/. UK’s Urenco signed a contract with Ukraine’s Energoatom on supply of enriched uranium until 2035, Energoatom announced.
"On November 27, 2023, Energoatom President Pyotr Kotin and Urenco CEO Boris Shucht signed a contract on supply of enriched uranium product for Ukrainian NPPs. Under the agreement, Urenco will supply enriched uranium to Energoatom until 2035, with an option to prolong the contract until 2043," the company said on its Telegram channel.
According to Energoatom, the current contract with Urenco expires in 2025.
The company also noted that US’ Westinghouse is the only supplier of fuel assemblies for Energoatom NPPs; Urenco supplies enriched uranium for Westinghouse.
All Ukrainian nuclear power plant reactors were designed for fuel assemblies that are currently being produced by Russia’s TVEL company. Rosatom noted that TVEK will continue to provide economically efficient fuel for Ukrainian power plants under the existing contract until 2025. Last year, Energoatom announced that Ukraine will completely reject Russian fuel and intends to replace it with Westinghouse assemblies. In late February this year, Energoatom announced that all Ukrainian reactors will be switched to Westinghouse fuel starting next year. Currently, US-made assemblies are being use in a single VVER-440 reactor of the Rovno Nuclear Power Plant.
