Escalation of tensions in Syria could ignite some 'power kegs' in that country — UN envoy
"We need more than just good intentions: We need sustained deescalation operationalized through robust channels between all stakeholders," Najat Rochdi elaborated
UNITED NATIONS, November 28. /TASS/. The conflict between Israel and Palestine is taking a toll on Syria, UN Deputy Special Envoy for Syria Najat Rochdi said at a meeting of the UN Security Council.
"We remain deeply concerned about the prospect of a potentially wider escalation in Syria. The effects of the tragic developments in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel continue to be felt inside Syria," she said.
"Violence continues in Syria, including spillover from Gaza and Israel. To continue such violence is to play with fire," the envoy went on to say. "Just one miscalculation - one stray artillery shell or misjudged airstrike - could ignite a dozen different powder kegs that lie within Syrian borders."
"We need more than just good intentions: We need sustained deescalation operationalized through robust channels between all stakeholders," Rochdi continued. "We need the killing, injuring and displacement of civilians, and the destruction of infrastructure not just to decrease, but to end."
The diplomat criticized Israeli airstrikes on Syria, including on the Damascus airport.
"Targeting civilian infrastructure is prohibited under international law," she said.
Rochdi also said the US strikes Syria, claiming that it responds to Iranian attacks against its forces.
Earlier, Russia's envoy to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said that the US strikes on sites in Syria flagrantly violate international law and the sovereignty of the Arab country.
