EU should prepare to compensate for US aid to Kiev, which could be cut — Borrell
The head of the EU foreign policy service also stated that the European Union has already provided Kyiv with more than the United States, but “the main guarantee of security should be the admission of Ukraine into the European family, for which the EU will need unity”
MADRID, November 11. /TASS/. US aid to Ukraine is likely to decrease, so EU countries should be politically ready to compensate for it, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said.
"We have so many problems. First of all Ukraine, where a quick victory over Russia is not expected," he said at the Congress of the Party of European Socialists in Malaga. "European countries, which have the means to do so, should be politically willing to continue to support Ukraine and compensate for US aid, which is likely to decline," he pointed out. The top EU diplomat said that the EU has already given Kiev more than the US, but "the main guarantee of security should be the admission of Ukraine into the European family, for which the EU will need unity."
The second problem for the EU, according to Borrell, is the situation in Gaza, which is "a political and moral failure of the international community." The EU foreign policy chief said that the best solution to this conflict remains "a two-state solution, but it is much more difficult to achieve today than it was 30 years ago."
Borrel emphasized that all these events are causing "the fear of European citizens, and fear is a bad advisor."
On November 8, the European Commission recommended to the EU Council to start negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union, and now this decision should be approved by EU leaders at a summit in Brussels in December. The start of negotiations does not set any deadlines for accession, for example, in the case of Turkey, this process has been going on for more than 18 years and has no real prospects for completion in the foreseeable future.
Earlier, Bloomberg reported that the EU will not be able to fulfill its promise to supply Kiev with one million shells within a year, from March 2023 to March 2024. According to the agency's sources, as of September 2023, that is, after half of this period, Brussels was able to supply Kiev with about 300,000 shells and missiles.
