PREVIEW: APEC week to kick off in San Francisco
Financial officials from a number of APEC members will hold meetings on November 12-13. The foreign and trade ministers of some countries will meet on November 14-15, and a summit is set to take place on November 16-17
SAN FRANCISCO, November 11. /TASS/. The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) week will kick off in the US city of San Francisco on Saturday.
As the host, the United States announced that this year’s APEC event would take place under the theme of "Creating a Resilient and Sustainable Future for All."
Key events
Financial officials from a number of APEC members will hold meetings on November 12-13. The foreign and trade ministers of some countries will meet on November 14-15, and a summit is set to take place on November 16-17.
San Francisco will also host a series of meetings and briefings where officials will assess the activities that were carried out within APEC over the past year.
Russia’s participation
US Senior Official for APEC Matt Murray said earlier in the week that the Washington administration had sent invitations to the San Francisco summit to all members of the forum, including Russia.
Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk will head Russia’s delegation. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday that Washington had not yet issued visas to all members of the Russian delegation.
Last year, Russia’s delegation to the APEC summit in Bangkok was led by First Deputy Prime Minister Andrey Belousov. In 2020 and 2021, APEC summits were held online due to the coronavirus pandemic and Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the events via video conference.
China-US relations
US officials said that US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping would hold a meeting on the sidelines of the San Francisco summit on November 15 to discuss bilateral relations, as well as international and regional issues.
