"Only by changing the basic paradigms of our thinking shall we be able to achieve common security and a lasting peace," Andrey Kortunov added

BEIJING, November 2. /TASS/. China contributes to universal security and promotes long-term peace, seeking to ensure a balance of interests in the international arena instead of a balance of power that has no future, Andrey Kortunov, the director of the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC), has said.

"The future <...> belongs to responsible players who are ready to respect each other and maintain a sophisticated balance of interests rather than a rough balance of power," he writes in an article published in the Chinese daily Global Times. "It is also important that this idea is being promoted by China, a country that has all the resources needed to succeed in the old game of balance of power."

The expert quotes British and American filmmaker Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999), who said once that in the world of power balance "the great nations have always acted like gangsters and the small nations like prostitutes." Kortunov says that under such principles of interaction the future belongs to neither.

"Only by changing the basic paradigms of our thinking shall we be able to achieve common security and a lasting peace," he said.

Kortunov noted that multilateral cooperation mechanisms such as the Xiangshan Security Forum regularly held in Beijing played an important role in ensuring the balance of interests in the world. He recalled that during this event, representatives of countries with significant disagreements between them have an opportunity to discuss topical issues in a friendly atmosphere.

On October 29-31, the Chinese capital hosted the 10th Xiangshan Security Forum, attended by over 1,800 participants from more than 90 countries and international organizations. Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu represented Russia.
