Chinese foreign minister tells Biden one-China principle should be honored
Wang Yi also demanded that the White House comply with the agreements that were reached in the 1970s and 1980s, when the countries normalized their relations
BEIJING, October 28. /TASS/. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at a meeting with US President Joe Biden demanded that the White House observe the principle of "one China" and honor the agreements that were reached in the 1970s and 1980s when the countries normalized their relations, the Xinhua news agency reported.
"The 'one China' principle and the provisions of the three China-US communiques (the joint statements of 1972, 1978 and 1982 on normalizing ties, establishing diplomatic relations, and reducing and ending US arms supplies to Taiwan - TASS) is an important political foundation for relations between the PRC and the US," the Chinese diplomat was quoted as saying.
According to Wang Yi, Beijing insists that Washington adhere to these agreements. He said China is willing to improve relations with the United States, adding that the stabilization of bilateral ties should take place on the basis of mutual respect and mutual benefit.
"Genuine stabilization and improvement of relations between China and the United States is not only in line with the fundamental interests of our countries and their peoples, but also reflects the interest of the international community," the minister stated.
According to Wang Yi, his current visit to the United States aims to "prevent further deterioration of bilateral relations and start to stabilize them." He pointed to the importance of normalizing interaction between the two countries, taking into account the consensus that was reached between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Biden last year on the Indonesian island of Bali, as well as the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, which could be held in San Francisco in November.
