NATO chief calls for Sweden’s inclusion by late November — Bloomberg
The application will be initially reviewed by the Turkish parliament’s committee on foreign relations
NEW YORK, October 24. /TASS/. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg sent a letter to allies about a week ago saying that Sweden should join the bloc by the meeting of the NATO foreign ministers to be held on November 28-29 at the latest, Bloomberg reported, citing an unnamed Swedish official.
On Monday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan asked his country’s parliament to ratify Sweden’s NATO membership bid. The application will be initially reviewed by the Turkish parliament’s committee on foreign relations. Once approved, the entire assembly will hold a vote on the protocol.
Next, Hungary’s approval will be needed, Bloomberg wrote. Swedish Minister for European Union Affairs Jessika Roswall told reporters in Luxemburg that she would discuss the issue with her Hungarian counterpart. "We look forward to a quick decision by Hungary as well, and we want to become [NATO] members as soon as possible," Bloomberg quoted her as saying.
According to Bloomberg, a NATO spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.
