Over 60 people detained during protests near Georgian parliament

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, 50 police officers were injured during the riots

TBILISI, March 8. /TASS/. Employees of the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs detained 66 people near the parliament in Tbilisi during protests against the bill on foreign agents, the department said on Wednesday.

"Law enforcement officers detained 66 people for disorderly conduct and disobeying the lawful demands of the police, in accordance with Articles 166 and 173 of the Administrative Offenses Code. The facts of these individuals' offenses will be presented to the court within the legal time frame," the statement said.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, 50 police officers were injured during the riots. Some of them are still being treated in hospitals.

According to the TASS correspondent, the situation near the Georgian parliament is calm at the moment, law enforcement officers are on duty.

Georgian lawmakers passed the bill on foreign agents in the first reading on Tuesday. During the parliamentary session, thousands of the bill’s opponents gathered outside the parliament building. They tried to block a staff entrance, through which lawmakers were supposed to leave the building. This led to clashes with police, during which tear gas and water cannons were used to disperse the crowd.
