Death toll from Syrian earthquake exceeds 1,000 — TV

2,400 people were injured

CAIRO, February 6. /TASS/. The death toll from the earthquake in Syria has surpassed 1,000, the Al Arabiya television channel reported on Monday.

Earlier reports said 960 people were killed.

The Asharq television channel reported, citing the Syrian Health Ministry, that 2,400 people were injured. According to the ministry, the search and rescue operation continues and the death toll could rise.

The Syrian provinces of Aleppo, Latakia Tartous and Hama have been hit the hardest. The Health Ministry said 28 ambulance vehicles and seven mobile clinics have been sent to the impacted areas. Four truckloads of medicines and first aid materials have also been sent to Aleppo, Latakia and Hama.

A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck the southeast of Turkey on Monday. Another 7.7 magnitude quake followed. In Turkey, more than 1,600 people were killed and more than 11,000 sustained injuries.
