Terrorist attack in Peshawar mosque killed 84 people, not 101, police say

City police chief Ijaz Khan explained that some relatives of the victims reported the deaths of their family members twice

ISLAMABAD, February 2. /TASS/. The bombing attack in a Peshawar mosque in northwestern Pakistan killed 84 people, rather than 101 as was believed before, city police chief Ijaz Khan has told Agence France-Presse.

"We had a confusion when some relatives of the victims reported the deaths of their family members twice," he explained.

The police chief said the bombing killed 83 police officers and one civilian employee of the law enforcement compound.

Pakistani officials on Wednesday said 23 people, including police officers, had been detained on suspicion of involvement in the attack.

The terrorist attack in Peshawar took place on Monday evening. According to Pakistani security agencies, a suicide bomber set off an explosive device during a midday prayer in the mosque. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (a group linked to the Taliban, which is banned in Russia) has taken responsibility for the attack.
