Russia reduces infant mortality rates despite coronavirus pandemic

"Even in the pandemic years, which were rather difficult for the entire healthcare system, it became possible to reach all-time lows in infant mortality," Mikhail Murashko said

MOSCOW, January 31. /TASS/. Russia managed to bring the infant mortality rate to all-time lows despite the coronavirus pandemic, Health Minister Mikhail Murashko said on Tuesday.

Russia’s infant mortality rate is 4.3 for the first 11 months of 2022, he specified, adding that the yearly figure might be even a bit better.

"Neither the pandemic nor the new challenges that replaced it were able to reverse the steady downward trend in infant mortality. Even in the pandemic years, which were rather difficult for the entire healthcare system, it became possible to reach all-time lows in infant mortality," Murashko said at an expanded meeting of the Federation Council (the upper house of parliament) Committee on Social Policy.

The Russian health minister pointed out that the rate primarily depended on the number of deliveries in the country.
