Under Turkey's system, if the parliament does not approve the election date, the president himself can sign a decree to hold elections on that date
ANKARA, January 23. /TASS/. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday that May 14 has been fixed as the day of the presidential and parliamentary elections in Turkey.
"After thorough analysis, it was decided to set the elections for May 14. If the parliament approves the new date, we will be glad. If not, I, as president, will make [this] decision," the president said after a cabinet meeting, with his speech broadcast by the TRT television channel.
Under Turkey's system, if the parliament does not approve the election date, the president himself can sign a decree to hold elections on that date, but formally the parliament must do so first.
