PARIS, January 19. /TASS/. As many as 1.1 million people have taken part in demonstrations against pension reform in France, the BFM TV channel reported on Thursday, citing the French Interior Ministry.

According to official figures, 80,000 people took to the streets in Paris on Thursday, making it the single largest protest of the day.

Earlier, the head of the General Confederation of Labor (one of the eight largest trade unions calling for strikes and protests), Philippe Martinez told the BFM TV channel that, according to his data, a total of two million people took part in various demonstrations across the country on Thursday. In Paris, according to the union, about 400,000 people protested against the pension reform.

According to the latest figures released by the Prefecture de Police in Paris, 38 people were detained at the rally in the French capital. Clashes began half an hour after the start of the march from the Place de la Republique, TASS reported from the site. Hooligans, covering their faces with black masks and hoods, threw bottles, stones and firecrackers at the police, and set fire to garbage cans in the streets. The police used tear gas during the clashes.

At the moment, the situation on the streets of the French capital city is largely peaceful, as the main column of demonstrators have already reached their final destination - the Place de la Nation. Some protesters have already left the site.
