EU demands Serbia recognize Kosovo, impose anti-Russian sanctions — PM
"The EU recommendations are contradictory in terms of values. They are contradictory in principle," Ana Brnabic emphasized
BELGRADE, November 25. /TASS/. The European Parliament demands Serbia recognize Kosovo’s independence and impose sanctions on Russia, if it wants to be admitted to the European Union, Serbia’s Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said on Friday after a meeting with EU Ambassador to Serbia Emanuele Giaufret.
"These recommendations are contradictory in terms of values. They are contradictory in principle. Thus, one says that Serbia may become a European Union member only if it agrees to impose sanctions on Russia because Russia has violated the territorial integrity of an internationally-recognized state," she said. "If you object against sanctions over the infringement on territorial integrity, we recommend you disembark from your European path. Another recommendation says that you can continue your European path only after you renounce your territorial integrity."
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said after his talks with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell and EU Special Representative for the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue Miroslav Lajcak in Paris that Serbia would impose sanctions on Russia only if the republic had the sword of Damocles hanging over its head. He stressed that his country never pursues a policy of sanctions against those who "helped it preserve its territorial integrity."
After the beginning of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine, Vucic said in an address to the nation that although Serbia supports Ukraine’s territorial integrity, it will not impose sanctions against Russia. He also announced that Belgrade is suspending army and police drills with all foreign partners. He noted that Serbia considers Russia and Ukraine to be brotherly nations, regrets what is going on in Eastern Europe and is ready to offer humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.
