BALI /Indonesia/, November 16. /TASS/. Indonesia is ready to host the Summer Olympic Games in the country’s new capital of Nusantara in 2036, President of Indonesia Joko Widodo said on Wednesday.

"We express our readiness to host the 2036 Olympic Games in our country’s new capital of Nusantara," Widodo said speaking at the G20 Summit, which is currently hosted by Indonesia’s Bali.

The Indonesian president also reiterated that sports should remain outside politics and "has the power to unite the whole world, especially given the current developments."

President Widodo announced plans to move Indonesia's capital from Jakarta in 2019, and nearly $32 billion has been earmarked for this purpose. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic at that time, the project was put on hold and is anticipated to resume in two years’ time.

Indonesian National Development Planning Minister Suharso Monoarfa stated in mid-January that a decision was made that Indonesia's new capital, which would be situated in the southeast of the island of Kalimantan, would be named Nusantara, which means "archipelago."

Indonesia is located on the world's largest archipelago, which consists of 18,000 islands.
