BEIJING, November 14. /TASS/. Chinese leader Xi Jinping emphasized to US President Joe Biden the futility of attempts by separatists seeking to achieve Taiwanese independence, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday.

"Resolving the Taiwan question is a matter for the Chinese and China’s internal affair," the ministry quoted Xi Jinping as saying. "It is the common aspiration of the Chinese people and nation to realize national reunification and safeguard territorial integrity."

"Anyone that seeks to split Taiwan from China will be violating the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation; the Chinese people will absolutely not let that happen," the statement continued. "

"We hope that the US side will match its words with action and abide by the one-China policy and the three joint communiques," the Chinese ministry noted.

"President Biden has said on many occasions that the United States does not support ‘Taiwan independence’ and has no intention to use Taiwan as a tool to seek advantages in competition with China or to contain China. We hope that the US side will act on this assurance to real effect," the ministry added.

The US and Chinese leaders held their Bali meeting in the run-up to the G20 summit. As China’s central television reported, the meeting lasted over three and a half hours.

Before the start of his first face-to-face talks with the Chinese leader as the head of state, Biden said that the world expected the United States and China to play a key role in responding to global challenges, including climate change and the food crisis.

China’s leader said he hoped that the two leaders would manage to hold a substantive exchange of opinions on various issues of China-US relations during the talks.

Taiwan issue

Taiwan has been governed by its local administration since 1949 when the Kuomintang’s remaining forces headed by Chiang Kai-shek (1887-1975) were defeated in the Chinese Civil War and took refuge on the island.

Taiwan has preserved the flag and several other symbols of the Republic of China that had existed before the Communists took over the mainland. According to China’s official position supported by most countries, including Russia, the Island of Taiwan is one of China’s provinces.
