UN chief urges conditions for peace in Ukraine

Antonio Guterres said that any kind of peace should be based on the values of the UN Charter and international law

UNITED NATIONS, November 12. /TASS/. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Saturday that it was important to establish conditions for peace in Ukraine, according to a readout of his speech released by the UN press service.

"It is very important to create the conditions to re-establish dialogue and progressively to start looking into a future where peace will prevail," he said at a news conference on the sidelines of the 12th ASEAN-UN summit in Cambodia.

The UN chief said that any kind of peace should be based on the values of the UN Charter and international law.

On October 4, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky enacted a National Security and Defense Council decision not to conduct any negotiations with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. In his turn, Putin said on October 31 that he saw no opportunity to discuss any kind of agreements with Ukraine as long as the Kiev government shows no desire to do so. However, Putin stressed, Moscow’s good will is well known and it is not subjected to any changes. All it takes to reach agreements is to sit down and engage, the Russian president said.

On February 24, Putin launched a special military operation in Ukraine in response to a request for help from the heads of the Donbass republics. After that, the West imposed sweeping sanctions against Russia and beefed up arms supplies to the Kiev regime worth tens of billions of dollars.
