India’s top diplomat believes world headed towards multipolarity
Subrahmanyam Jaishankar stressed that "the state of multilaterism, especially the work of the UN and its key organs," was clearly in demand today
MOSCOW, November 8. /TASS/. The world today is moving towards multipolarity, that is why it is necessary to strengthen the multipolar system, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said at a joint press conference with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday.
"The world is moving toward greater multipolarity, through steady and continuous rebalancing, and that especially means [a transition to the] multipolar issue," the Indian top diplomat said.
He stressed that "the state of multilaterism, especially the work of the UN and its key organs," was clearly in demand today. The top diplomat noted that "even as we focus on the immediate", there was the need to "reform [to achieve] multilaterism," going on to point out that "the reform of the UN Security Council, is becoming difficult to deny," with Jaishankar further lauding Moscow, saying "We welcome Russian support for India in that regard."
He added that the sides also discussed the situation around Ukraine and will continue these discussions later in the future. "The global economy is simply too interdependent for a significant conflict [to arise] anywhere, not to have any major consequences elsewhere," the Indian foreign minister said, noting that "India <…> advocates the return to dialogue and diplomacy."
According to India’s chief diplomat, the parties also discussed the situation in a number of world regions, including Afghanistan, Iran, the Middle East, and the situation in the Asia-Pacific Region.
