Jakarta awaits Putin’s decision on G20 summit participation — top diplomat
When asked to comment on Kiev’s stance, the minister said the presiding nation "has no right to expel" anyone from the group, unless there is consensus among all member states
LONDON, November 3. /TASS/. Indonesia, the host nation of the G20 summit scheduled for later this month, does not yet know whether Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend the event, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi told Reuters in an interview on Thursday.
"Let's wait until D-Day," she said, when asked whether the Russian president had been invited to attend the summit on November 15-16.
According to the agency’s report, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry demanded that Russia be excluded from the format, and its invitation to the summit be revoked.
When asked to comment on Kiev’s stance, the minister said the presiding nation "has no right to expel" anyone from the group, unless there is consensus among all member states.
"It's very, very, very difficult," the minister said, commenting on preparations for the summit.
"I can say that Indonesia's presidency this time, maybe it's among the or maybe the most difficult of all G20's because of the geopolitical issues, economy, and others," she added.
According to anonymous diplomatic sources, cited by Reuters, a joint communique is unlikely to be adopted at the summit, but a declaration by the leaders may be published instead. Retno Marsudi declined to comment on what form the document would take, saying that the Indonesian presidency was instead more focused on its substance.
Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Teuku Faizasyah was quoted by Bloomberg on Thursday as saying that 17 state leaders from the 20-member group of nations have already confirmed their participation, while three more are yet to answer. Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier this week that the decision on his personal attendance at the summit is yet to be made.
The 17th summit of the Group of Twenty (G20) is to convene on Indonesia’s resort island of Bali on November 15-16. The summit will follow a series of ministerial meetings, working groups and contact groups, held earlier this year under Indonesia’s presidency.
