UN cautions against escalation amid reports about Ukraine’s dirty bomb
Our position is that all parties should avoid any actions that could lead to miscalculation and escalation of what's already a devastating conflict, Spokesman for the UN Secretary General Stephane Dujarric said
UNITED NATIONS, October 24./TASS/. The United Nations urges all parties to avoid moves that would lead to miscalculation and escalation against the background of reports that Kiev is plotting a provocation with a ‘dirty bomb’ detonation, Spokesman for the UN Secretary General Stephane Dujarric told a briefing on Monday.
"I mean, we have no... we're aware of these... of the reports of what's been seen in the press. I mean, we have no way of knowing one way or another, but I can tell you that our position as... on this issue, as many others, is that all parties should avoid any actions that could lead to miscalculation and escalation of what's already a devastating conflict," the spokesman said.
Ukraine's potential detonation of a dirty bomb would lead to the radioactive contamination of an area covering several thousand square meters, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, Chief of the Radiation, Chemical and Biological Defense Forces of the Russian Armed Forces, said on Monday. Russia’s Defense Ministry is working on combating possible provocations by Ukraine, with all forces and means ready for executing missions amid radioactive contamination, Kirillov stressed.
The ‘dirty bomb’ threat was also mentioned by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Monday. Russia’s top diplomat said that Moscow would raise the issue of Kiev’s preparations for using such weapons at the UN. Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu earlier held negotiations with his counterparts from the United States, Great Britain, Turkey and France, warning about the ‘dirty bomb’ threat posed by the Kiev regime. Washington, London and Paris, however, dismissed Russia’s warnings.
