Rishi Sunak declared new UK Conservative leader — party committee head
It is reported that Rishi Sunak automatically became the new party leader after House leader Penny Mordaunt announced her withdrawal from the race on Twitter Monday
LONDON, October 24. /TASS/. UK Ex-Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak won the race for the office of the Conservative Party leader and became a new Prime Minister, head of the Committee 1922 (which defines the party leader election procedure) Graham Brady announced Monday.
"We have received one valid nomination. Rishi Sunak is elected leader of the Conservative Party," Brady said, adding that Sunak will address the party at 14:30 [local time].
Sunak automatically became the new party leader after House leader Penny Mordaunt announced her withdrawal from the race on Twitter Monday.
"We have now chosen our next Prime Minister. This decision is an historic one and shows, once again, the diversity and talent of our party. Rishi has my full support," Mordaunt tweeted.
Therefore, Rishi Sunak, 42, became the winner of a short election campaign. Considering that the Conservative Party is currently in power, Sunak will head the government in the upcoming days - possibly, on Tuesday - becoming the first ethnic Indian to become a British Prime Minister in the UK history.
