IAEA chief says agreement on Zaporozhye NPP may be reached by yearend
It is important to ensure an agreement on basic principles for protecting the NPP, Rafael Grossi said
BUENOS AIRES, October 18. /TASS/. It is possible to reach an agreement on ensuring security at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) by the end of the year, though the work should continue, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi said on Monday.
"I think it is possible. We have had a very good dialogue with President [of Russia Vladimir] Putin and President [of Ukraine Vladimir] Zelensky," he told reporters during a visit to Argentina.
"It is important to ensure an agreement on basic principles for protecting the NPP. It is possible, though the work should continue," Grossi added.
The IAEA’s chief visited St. Petersburg on October 11, meeting with Putin there. He called contacts with the Russian leader extremely important from the viewpoint of ensuring the security of nuclear facilities, including the ZNPP. Director General also visited Kiev twice where he met Zelensky.
An IAEA mission led by Grossi visited the ZNPP, the largest operating nuclear power plants in Europe, in early September. After the mission left, two employees of the agency remained there as observers. Later, the IAEA published a report calling for the creation of a safety zone around the plant to prevent accidents due to military actions.
