BERLIN, October 11. /TASS/. Peace in Ukraine is possible only on the basis of talks between Russia and the US, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said in an interview with the German political magazine Cicero.

"The truce should not be between Russia and Ukraine, but between the United States and the Russian Federation," Orban said. "Anyone who thinks that this war will be ended through Russian-Ukrainian talks is not living in this world. The reality is different," the Hungarian prime minister stressed. At the same time, he noted that Ukraine is only able to defend itself because it receives military support from the US. "Therefore, the Americans must reach an agreement with the Russians. And then the <…> [conflict] will end," Orban summarized.

At the same time, the Hungarian prime minister does not consider US President Joe Biden a suitable negotiator on the American side. "The US president has gone too far," Orban said, recalling Biden's remarks about Russian President Vladimir Putin. "What I say will sound harsh. But the hope for peace is Donald Trump," the Hungarian prime minister stressed.

In addition, he pointed out that former German Chancellor Angela Merkel could have prevented the conflict in Ukraine. In particular, Orban recalled that Merkel had already prevented hostilities in 2014. "What Angela Merkel did during the crisis around Crimea was a masterpiece," the Hungarian prime minister stated. At the time, in his view, there had been no conflict because of Germany's diplomatic efforts. "They didn't let it escalate, and we all intervened," the politician concluded.

Orban is currently on a visit to Berlin. On Monday he held talks with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The details of the talks were not disclosed. The Hungarian prime minister also spoke at an economic forum. On October 9, Orban held a meeting with Merkel. No information about those talks was provided either.
