Japan mulls expelling Russian diplomat — report

According to Yomiuri Shimbun, the Japanese authorities will notify the Russian side about their decision promptly

TOKYO, October 4. /TASS/. The government of Japan plans to expel a Russian diplomat in response to Russia declaration of the Japanese consult in Vladivostok persona non grata, Yomiuri Shimbun reported Tuesday.

This issue is currently being examined, the report says. According to the newspaper, the Japanese authorities will notify the Russian side about their decision promptly.

On September 26, the Federal Security Service of Russia (FSB) reported that Japanese Consul in Vladivostok Motoki Tatsunori was apprehended in the act of receiving sensitive information about Russia’s cooperation with an Asia Pacific country and the effect of the Western sancitons policy on the economic situation in the Primorye Region for monetary reward. After that, the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the Japanese Embassy’s minster-counsellor and presented him with a decisive protest and a corresponding diplomatic note. The consul was declared persona non grata and was ordered to leave Russian within 47 hours. Tatsunori left the country on September 28.

The Japanese government condemned Russia’s actions and promised to consider potential reciprocal steps.
