Protectionism, bloc confrontation to lead to isolation — Chinese leader

Extreme sanctions will do harm not only to others but to their initiators as well, Xi Jinping noted

BEIJING, June 24. /TASS/. Protectionism and bloc confrontation can only lead to isolation and sanctions will do harm to both sides, China’s President Xi Jinping said on Friday.

"We must pool efforts to ensure favorable international environment for the development. Protectionism and bloc confrontation will only lead to self-isolation. Extreme sanctions will do harm not only to others but to their initiators as well and attempts at severing ties and stopping supplies are a road to nowhere," the Chinese foreign ministry quoted his as saying at an online BRICS+ summit.

The Chinese leader called for pooling efforts to promote the development of the open-type global economy, to create a fairer global governance system.

The BRICS+ summit is being attended by the political leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Algeria, Argentina, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Cambodia, Malaysia, Senegal, Thailand, Uzbekistan, Fiji, and Ethiopia.
