Ukrainian top diplomat floats discussing ‘pre-February 24’ borders with Russia
Dmitry Kuleba added that Kiev would continue defending the integrity of its sovereign territory
ROME, June 24. /TASS/. Establishing Ukraine’s borders along pre-February 24 lines could be up for discussion with Russia, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said on Friday.
The Ukrainian top diplomat also reaffirmed that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s proposal for a meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin remained in force.
"On my part, it would be unreasonable to disclose our terms [of negotiations with Russia] but today each point can be a subject matter for dialogue," Kuleba said in an interview with Italy’s La Repubblica daily, responding to a question about whether the Ukrainian side was ready to discuss "the borders prior to February 24, renouncing any return to the status of 1991."
As Kuleba argued, "the path towards achieving peace" must be discussed by the leaders of Ukraine and Russia. When asked about whether the proposal on a Putin-Zelensky encounter remained in force, the Ukrainian foreign minister answered in the affirmative: "Of course, everything is in force."
Kuleba added that Kiev would continue defending the integrity of its sovereign territory. He also acknowledged that Russia had superiority in its firepower and, therefore, the Western-supplied weapons were "insufficient for stabilizing the Donbass front."
"Russia is stronger," he admitted.
Russian President Putin announced on February 24 that in response to a request by the heads of the Donbass republics for assistance he had made a decision to carry out a special military operation in Ukraine. The Russian leader stressed that Moscow had no plans of occupying Ukrainian territories, noting that the operation was aimed at the denazification and demilitarization of Ukraine.
