Erdogan says West’s policies can’t be trusted
He conceded that Turkey could interact with Western countries in the fields of science and culture
ANKARA, June 12. /TASS/. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday said Western countries can’t be trusted, according to a video of his meeting with Turkish youth that was released by the presidential office.
"When we ask them (Greece - TASS) why you are creating these (US - TASS nte) bases, they answer: ‘Against Russia,’" the president said. "And what have you done for Ukraine against Russia? Their words are full of lies. The West cannot be trusted, especially when it comes to their politics."
He conceded that Turkey could interact with Western countries in the fields of science and culture. "But the policies of the West cannot be trusted. To this day they are waffling about us and the EU (on the issue of Turkey's accession - TASS)," he said.
Erdogan on Sunday ruled out early presidential and parliamentary elections in Turkey, according to a video of his meeting with Turkish youth that was released by the presidential office.
"They (the opposition - TASS) ask for naming a date for the elections," he said. "The elections will take place in June next year."
"There will be no early elections in November, Mr. Kemal," Erdogan said, referring to Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the leader of the Republican People's Party. "You first get prepared and tell us if you are going to run in the presidential elections. If you aren’t, then name your candidate."
On June 4, the spokesman for the ruling Justice and Development Party, Omer Celik, announced Erdogan's nomination as the People's Alliance candidate in the presidential election.
Presidential and parliamentary elections in Turkey are scheduled for June 2023. The ruling People's Alliance includes the Justice and Development Party and the far-right Nationalist Movement Party. Opposition parties have not yet named their candidates. A bloc of six opposition parties insists on holding early elections.
