Ukraine to seek release of mercenaries convicted in DPR — MFA

According to spokesman for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Oleg Nikolenko, all foreigners fighting in the armed forces of Ukraine are enlisted as Ukrainian military servicemen and are covered by the legal status of combatants

KIEV, June 9. /TASS/. The government of Ukraine will make every effort to ensure release of the foreign mercenaries that were sentenced to death by a court in the DPR for participating in hostilities as part of the Ukrainian armed forces, Oleg Nikolenko, spokesman for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, said on Thursday.

"Such public trials <...> undermine the mechanisms for the return of prisoners of war," he told the RBC-Ukraine news service. "The Ukrainian government will continue to make every effort to release all the defenders of Ukraine."

He also said that all foreigners fighting in the armed forces of Ukraine are enlisted as Ukrainian military servicemen. "They are covered by the legal status of combatants," the spokesman said. "All servicemen of the armed forces of Ukraine who are captured by the enemy enjoy the rights of prisoners of war."

A court in Donetsk on Thursday sentenced to death UK nationals Shaun Pinner and Aiden Aslin and Moroccan national Brahim Saadoun on charges of taking part in hostilities as mercenaries enlisted by Ukrainian armed units. The Prosecutor General's Office of the Republic previously reported that testimony obtained from Pinner, Aslin and Brahim Saadoun proved their involvement in the commission of crimes such as forcible seizure of power and mercenarism. The chairman of the panel of judges at the trial said the defendants have the right for being pardoned. They also have one month to appeal the verdict. A lawyer for the defendants said they will appeal.
