Scholz, Macron urge Putin to hold direct talks with Zelensky — German government

The spokesperson added that the call was held at the request of the German and French leaders

BERLIN, May 28. /TASS/. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz held a 90-minute telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin and French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday, focusing on the efforts to resolve the Ukraine crisis, German government spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit told reporters.

"The chancellor and the French president insisted on an immediate ceasefire and pullout of Russian troops. They called on the Russian president to engage into serious direct negotiations with the Ukrainian president and to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict," Hebestreit said.

The spokesperson added that the call was held at the request of the German and French leaders.

The Kremlin said earlier in the day that Putin "informed in detail about latest developments in the context of the ongoing special military operation," also touching upon "the state of affairs on the negotiating track, which is frozen because of Kiev." The Russian president "confirmed Russia is open to resuming the dialogue." Additionally, Putin highlighted that "pumping" up Ukraine with Western weapons was dangerous, the Kremlin noted.

Moscow said that the Russian president told Macron and Scholz that problems with food supplies were the result of the West’s erroneous economic and financial policies as well as the anti-Russian sanctions. Putin also pointed out that Russia was ready to help find options for unhampered exports of grain, including from the Black Sea ports, the Kremlin reported.
