ANKARA, May 27. /TASS/. A new cross-border operation of the Turkish army may begin soon in northern Syria, the Haberturk TV channel reported on Friday. It notes that for the first time Turkey will conduct two simultaneous operations on the adjacent territory: in Iraq and Syria.

The Turkish army has been conducting a military operation in northern Iraq since April 18.

"Preparations for the operation in Syria are 90% complete," the TV channel reports, citing its military sources. According to it, the operation will initially be limited to areas west of the Euphrates River.

"The format of the operation will be determined in the coming hours. It is reported that it [the operation] will start very soon," Haberturk TV channel reports, noting that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will make the decision to start the operation.

On May 26, the Turkish National Security Council discussed preparations for a new operation in northern Syria. Earlier it was announced that the operation would be carried out in four regions: Tel Rifat, Ain al-Arab, Ain Isa and Manbij. About 50,000 Turkish servicemen and representatives of the Ankara-controlled local forces in northern Syria are to be involved in the operation.

As a result of Turkey's earlier operations in northern Syria, a security zone was created between the towns of Aazaz and Jerablus north of Aleppo, Afrin was occupied, and the border areas east of the Euphrates River were taken under control.
