Russian security official warns flow of migrants from Afghanistan could grow
Nikolay Patrushev noted that the refugees mostly flocking to Iran and Pakistan could set foot in Central Asia
DUSHANBE, May 27. /TASS/. The flow of migrants from Afghanistan could increase if the situation in the country keeps getting worse, Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolay Patrushev warned on Friday.
"The situation with migrants risks worsening seriously," said Patrushev, who is taking part in multilateral consultations on Afghanistan in the capital of Tajikistan. He cited UN official figures for 2021 which said there were 2.6 billion refugees.
"The figures could increase many times, if the situation in Afghanistan keeps getting worse," he said in warning that refugees mostly flocking to Iran and Pakistan could set foot in Central Asia.
"Among other things, this could bring members of international terrorist organizations to our countries," Patrushev said, primarily referring to the Islamic State (outlawed in Russia) and Al-Qaeda (outlawed in Russia).
He also said the food crisis in Afghanistan with 95% of its population currently suffering from a lack of nutrition and about 55% starving could worsen as well.
