Russian investigators start looking into attack on Russian ambassador in Poland

MOSCOW, May 19. /TASS/. Russia’s Investigative Committee has started a criminal case to look into the attack on the Russian ambassador in Poland Sergey Andreyev that took place on May 9, the committee press service said on Thursday.

"The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation started a criminal case into the attack on the Russian ambassador in Poland," the statement said. "The investigation established that a citizen of Ukraine, Irina Zemlyana, and other unidentified persons attacked the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Poland, S.V. Andreyev, splashing a red liquid on his face and clothes, tearing off his glasses and St. George's ribbon, during the wreath-laying ceremony at the memorial cemetery of Soviet soldiers in Warsaw on May 9, 2022, as they aimed to complicate international relations between Russia and the Republic of Poland," the statement said.

Investigators have classified these actions as an attack on an internationally protected person - a crime provided for in Article 360 of the Russian Criminal Code.

The committee said that in accordance with the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the receiving State is obliged to treat a diplomatic official with due respect and to take all appropriate measures to prevent any attack on his person, freedom or dignity.

"Attacks on internationally protected persons and their official vehicles must be strictly prosecuted," the statement said. "To bring the perpetrators to justice, the Russian Federation will use all available legal and diplomatic mechanisms."
