Mevlut Cavusoglu noted that "the statements of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden are not constructive and provocative to this day"

BERLIN, May 15. /TASS/. Foreign Minister of Turkey Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Sunday he had brought Ankara's concerns over Finland and Sweden joining the NATO to the attention of the alliance partners.

"We spoke openly about the issues that concern us, including the contacts of Sweden and Finland with terrorist organizations PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party, Ankara considers it an extremist group - TASS) and YPG (the People's Defense Units in Syria, Turkey considers them a branch of the PKK - TASS), and in particular about the support provided to them by Sweden with weapons. We explained this to the Allies with the help of the documents we had. We also held a tripartite meeting with the foreign ministers of the two countries and honestly communicated our expectations to them. They expressed their willingness to work with us on the topics that concern us," he said on Sunday at a press conference in Berlin following an informal meeting of foreign ministers of NATO member states.

At the same time, Cavusoglu noted that "the statements of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden are not constructive and provocative to this day." "[Turkey] must definitely get security guarantees," he added.

Turkey does not object to the expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, but opposes countries that support terrorists, the minister added. "We have taken a very clear position. It is that [Finland and Sweden] should completely stop cooperation with terrorist organizations and lift restrictions on the supply of defense industry products to Turkey. Turkey does not object to the expansion of NATO, we oppose countries that support terrorists,"the minister said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on May 13 that he does not yet consider Finland and Sweden joining NATO positive, since according to him, they house terrorist organizations, in particular members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party banned in Turkey.
