Latvian police detains seven protesters against dismantling of Soviet memorial in Riga

RIGA, May 13. /TASS/. Latvian police detained seven people who protested against the decision of the Riga City Council to dismantle the memorial to Soviet warriors, the Delfi website reported Friday.
According to the report, four people were detained for organization of unauthorized rally, two were detained for use of banned symbols, one more was detained for minor civil disorder.
Meanwhile, Member of European Parliament and leader of the Latvian Russian Union political party Tatiana Zhadnyuk, detained earlier, was released from the police station, and was met by people carrying flowers.
On Friday, the Riga City Council supported the idea to dismantle the memorial to Soviet warriors - liberators of Soviet Latvia and Riga from Nazi German invaders. The decision to begin preparations for the dismantling of the memorial was supported by 39 votes, while 13 members opposed the idea.
Latvian Foreign Minister Edgards Rinkevics also announced Friday that 102 Russian citizens were declared personae non gratae in the republic indefinitely.
