Sweden may make official decision on NATO membership on May 16, newspaper says

It is also noted that Finland should apply for NATO membership as soon as possible

STOCKHOLM, May 12. /TASS/. Special debates over a report on the security policy will be held at the Swedish parliament on Monday, May 16, according to the press release of the legislative body published on Thursday. According to the Expressen newspaper, on the same day, the government will hold an additional session to make an official decision on Sweden’s application to NATO.

The debates were requested by the ruling Swedish Social Democratic Workers’ Party (SAP). The government will be represented by Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson.

If nothing unforeseen happens, the announcement of submitting a membership application will be made immediately following the meeting.

As reported earlier, on May 13, an interparty analysis of the situation in the sphere of the security policy will be ready. The SAP’s decision with regards to joining NATO will be made on May 15.

According to a joint statement by Finnish President Sauli Niinisto and Prime Minister Sanna Marin published on Thursday, Finland should apply for NATO membership as soon as possible. The formal decision on the application is expected to be made on Sunday, May 15. Many experts in Finland and Sweden assert that the two countries should join the alliance simultaneously.
