ANKARA, May 12. /TASS/. The United States has sent an official request to the Greek government for the deployment of F-35 and F-15 aircraft on the island of Crete, Turkish TV channel Ulusal Kanal announced on Wednesday.

According to the report, Athens has accepted this request and is preparing a response. If it is approved, US military aviation will be deployed at the Souda base on the coast of the bay of the same name in Crete. There are several Greek military installations of the Armed Forces, as well as one of the main NATO strongholds in the region. It was noted that US aircraft will be able to participate in exercises in the Mediterranean.

At the same time, the United States and Greece are discussing the strengthening of defensive capabilities in the zone of the islands of Rhodes, Lesbos, and Chios through NATO or US weapons. Athens is concerned about the potential threat from Turkey and the growing tension in the Aegean, where issues with the Turkish-Greek borders have not yet been settled.
