The majority of the deputies of the parliament in Finland have already supported joining the bloc
MOSCOW, May 12. /TASS/. Finland may officially announce its intention to join NATO as early as Thursday. Sweden is likely to follow suit soon, Reuters reported on Thursday, citing diplomatic sources.
"NATO allies expect Finland and Sweden to apply to join the alliance in the coming days and will grant membership quickly, five diplomats and officials said, as Russia's invasion of Ukraine forces a radical rethink of European security," Reuters wrote.
It was reported earlier, a cross-party analysis of the situation in security policy will be ready in Sweden on May 13, the ruling Social Democratic Workers' Party of Sweden will decide on joining NATO on May 15. Many prominent members of the party in light of the situation in Ukraine support abandoning the policy of non-alignment and joining the alliance.
The majority of the deputies of the parliament in Finland have already supported joining the bloc. The president and the government will make a decision on Helsinki's application together.
