Supplies of offensive weapons will not bring peace to Ukraine - China's UN envoy

It will only prolong and escalate the conflict and further aggravate humanitarian catastrophe, Zhang Jun noted

UNITED NATIONS, April 20. /TASS/. China calls upon other countries to refrain from sending offensive weapons to Ukraine, because such deliveries will only lead to escalation and exacerbate the humanitarian crisis there, Chinese Permanent Representative to the UN Zhang Jun has said.

"Continuing to send more offensive weapons will not bring peace. It will only prolong and escalate the conflict and further aggravate humanitarian catastrophe," he told the UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine on Tuesday.

All parties to the conflict in Ukraine should strictly comply with the international humanitarian law and do everything they can to facilitate evacuation and humanitarian assistance to civilians, Zhang Jun has said.

"China once again calls on all parties to the conflict to exercise maximum restraint, strictly abide by international humanitarian law, protect civilians and civilian facilities, and facilitate evacuation and humanitarian assistance operations," he told the UN Security Council’s meeting on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine on Tuesday.

The Chinese diplomat went on to say that the sides should "strengthen communication on humanitarian issues," including on opening of humanitarian corridors and organizing the safe evacuation of humanitarian personnel.
