KIEV, April 16. /TASS/. The Lvov court restricted the measure of detention for Ukrainian opposition politician Viktor Medvedchuk, remanding him in custody and refusing bail, the Strana publication said on Saturday.
"The Lvov court has changed the restrictive measure for Viktor Medvedchuk. He was remanded in custody without the possibility of bail," the report said.
In May 2021, Medvedchuk was charged with high treason and "violation of laws and customs of war." He was placed under round-the-clock house arrest.
More charges against the opposition leader were filed in October 2021, namely another count of state treason and assisting terrorist activities. According to investigators, in late 2014 - early 2015 he was allegedly involved in coal supplies (worth about $7.6 million) from the Donbass areas that were not controlled by Kiev. Medvedchuk dismissed all the charges.
On February 27, Larisa Cherednichenko, Medvedchuk’s lawyer, said the opposition politician had fled his home in Kiev, where he was serving house arrest, in the wake of death threats from nationalist groups. However, in her words, he remained in the Ukrainian capital. On March 18, a Ukrainian court arrested Medvedchuk in absentia and put him on the wanted list.
