Car crashes into fence of Russian Embassy in Bucharest, driver dead — radio station

Members of law enforcement are establishing the causes of the incident

BUCHAREST, April 6. /TASS/. A private vehicle rammed the fence of the Russian Embassy in the Romanian capital on Wednesday morning. According to Radio Romania, the car subsequently caught on fire, the driver died.

"This morning around 06:00 [local time] (same time with Moscow - TASS) an incident was recorded involving a motor vehicle which ran off the highway and crashed into a fence of one of diplomatic missions. The car’s driver died, the interference of firefighters was needed to extinguish a fire in the car," the city police reported.

According to photos and videos posted on Facebook (outlawed in Russia, owned by Meta Platforms, Inc. which is recognized as extremist in Russia), the burning vehicle is right in front of the embassy's gates.

Romanian TV channels citing their own sources insist that this was a planned attack. According to some of them, the driver stopped in front of the gates and after a short exchange with a guard directed his car towards the gates.

Romania’s Antena 3 TV channel reports that investigators established the identity of the driver who was Bogdan Draghici who headed the TATA association which protected fathers’ rights for children in divorce lawsuits. According to the TV channel, on Tuesday, he was sentenced to 15 years and 4 months in prison for abusing his daughter. He was also under investigation in the case of sexual aggression, was under judicial supervision and was banned from leaving the country until May 26, 2022. The investigation into establishing the causes and circumstances of the incident is underway. Currently, the traffic on the street where the embassy is located is restricted.

The Russian Embassy did not provide TASS with a comment, specifying that they are expecting information from Romanian official sources.
