Arab coalition ceases military action in Yemen during negotiations

CAIRO, March 30. /TASS/. The Saudi-led Arab coalition announced the cessation of military actions in Yemen during inter-Yemeni talks to begin on Wednesday, the Saudi Press Agency reported, citing the alliance’s Official Spokesperson Brigadier General Turki Al-Malki.

"With the view of creating propitious conditions needed for successful consultations and a favorable environment for the Holy Month of Ramadan to make peace, and achieve security and stability in Yemen, the Joint Forces Command of the Coalition hereby announces cessation of military operations in Yemen beginning at (0600) Wednesday, March 30 2022," the spokesperson was quoted as saying. "The Joint Forces Command of the Coalition will abide by this cessation, and undertake all necessary steps and procedures to ensure its success."

The decision was made in response to a request by Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Dr. Nayef Al-Hajraf to suspend all military actions during the consultations, to be held in Riyadh between March 30 and April 7.

Armed confrontation between government forces and Ansar Allah (Houthi) rebels has been going on in Yemen since August 2014, reaching the most active phase in March 2015 after the Saudi-led coalition invaded the country. The ongoing conflict has triggered the world’s gravest humanitarian crisis, with more than 24 million Yemenis, or about 80% of the country’s population, being in need for humanitarian aid and the number of internally displaced persons exceeding three million, according to the UN data.
