Poland withdraws consent to agreement on protection of investments with Russia

The agreement was signed by the governments of Poland and the Russian Federation on October 2, 1992, but did not enter into force

WARSAW, March 29. /TASS/. The Polish authorities have decided to withdraw their consent to the conclusion of an agreement with Russia on the support and mutual protection of investments, Peter Muller, the press secretary of the government of the republic, told a briefing on Tuesday.

According to him, at its meeting on Tuesday, the government decided "to send a note to the Russian Federation informing about the withdrawal of Poland's consent to conclude an agreement with the Russian Federation on the support and mutual protection of investments."

"This agreement, which was signed by the governments of Poland and the Russian Federation on October 2, 1992, did not enter into force, but Russia could at any time complete the provisions of this agreement, which was developed by the Polish and Russian sides some time ago," he explained.

"We see this possibility as a threat that could follow from the rules of this agreement," Muller added.

According to him, the agreement is "archaic and departs from European norms and the practice of resolving economic disputes."

"Because of such caution, we decided to send a note to the Russian government to withdraw Poland's consent to be bound by this agreement," he said.

"The conclusion of this agreement would not guarantee protection for Polish entrepreneurs investing in Russia," the spokesman said.
