Poll shows bulk of Georgians approve Tbilisi’s decision not to join anti-Russian sanctions

64.5% of the residents supported the authorities' refusal to join the sanctions

TBILISI, March 21. /TASS/. Some 65% of Georgians approve of Tbilisi’s decision not to join the US-led West’s sanctions against Russia imposed over the situation in Ukraine. Imedi, a Georgian TV channel, disclosed this information based on a poll conducted by GORBI Research Institute on Monday.

When asked about the Georgian government's actions concerning the West’s sanctions against Russia, 64.5% of those polled supported the authorities' refusal to join the sanctions, while 30.4% disapproved of the decision, and 5.2% were undecided or refused to answer.

That said, 76.5% of the survey’s participants also opposed the idea of Georgia getting involved in Ukraine, while 19.6% disagreed, and 3.9% of those surveyed gave no answer.

GORBI conducted the survey on March 10-16 with over 1,000 people having been polled. The margin of error is estimated to be 3%.

Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said on February 25 that the country was not going to join the financial and economic sanctions imposed by a number of Western countries against Russia after Moscow had launched its a special military operation in Ukraine.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation in response to a request for help by the heads of the Donbass republics. He stressed Russia had no intention of occupying the country, the operation was aimed at the denazification and demilitarization of Ukraine. In response, the US, the EU, Britain and a number of other countries announced sanctions against Russian individuals and entities.
