Turkey remains committed to Montreux Convention, top diplomat says
According to the Turkish foreign minister, Turkey maintains contact with both parties to the conflict, trying to make every effort to help resolve the issue as soon as possible
MOSCOW, March 16. /TASS/. Ankara remains committed to the Montreux Convention Regarding the Regime of the Straits, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said at a meeting with Russian top diplomat Sergey Lavrov on Wednesday.
"We would like to point out that our decision with regard to the Montreux Convention remains the same. We will continue to comply with its provisions," he said. "We also would like to note that we were glad to learn of Russia’s decision that two ships would not move through the straits," Cavusoglu added.
The Turkish top diplomat also expressed willingness to discuss the situation in Ukraine. "The Ukrainian crisis is a very important issue on our agenda. We certainly must do everything to find a peaceful solution to the crisis," Cavusoglu stressed.
According to him, Turkey maintains contact with both parties to the conflict, trying to make every effort to help resolve the issue as soon as possible. Cavusoglu expects the experience of cooperation that Turkey and Russia gained in Syria to contribute to these efforts.
When commenting on Turkish-Russian relations, he pointed to a wide range of fields for cooperation.
