Protocol marking start of Iran’s SCO membership process signed in Tashkent

According to the ministry, the move indicates Iran’s willingness to observe the purposes and principles of the SCO Charter and abide by the international agreements and documents adopted by the organization

TASHKENT, March 11. /TASS/. Representatives of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states and Iran have signed a protocol in Uzbekistan’s capital of Tashkent, which marks the start of Iran’s SCO membership process, the Uzbek Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday.

"The signing of the protocol is a practical step aimed at implementing the decision that the leaders of eight SCO member states made at their Dushanbe summit last year to start the process of providing SCO membership to Iran," the statement reads.

According to the ministry, the move indicates Iran’s willingness to observe the purposes and principles of the SCO Charter and abide by the international agreements and documents adopted by the organization. Now, Iran is expected to sign a memorandum of commitment at an SCO summit scheduled to take place in Uzbekistan’s Samarkand in September 2022. After that, the leaders of SCO member states will consider providing membership to Iran.

"The accession of a country such as Iran will expand the SCO’s geographic zone of responsibility and open new prospects for regional cooperation. Our organization is well on its way to a broad transcontinental cooperation in Eurasia," Uzbek Deputy Foreign Minister Vladimir Norov said at the signing ceremony.

The SCO was established in June 2001 in China’s Shanghai. Its members currently include Russia, China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Until recently, Iran was an SCO observer along with Afghanistan, Belarus and Mongolia. Azerbaijan, Armenia, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Turkey are dialogue partners.
