Indian Air Force planes bring home more than 600 Indians fleeing Ukraine

NEW DELHI, March 5. /TASS/. Three Indian Air Force planes delivered more than 600 Indians, mostly students, who left the Ukrainian territory from airports in Ukraine's neighboring countries, to a military airfield near New Delhi on Saturday morning.

"Three Air Force C-17 aircraft returned to Hindan Air Base with 629 Indian nationals evacuated from airfields in Poland, Romania and Slovakia," the country's Air Force press office said in a Twitter post.

The Air Force points out that so far, Indian military transport planes have made 10 sorties, returning home with 2,056 passengers on board as part of the Ganga evacuation operation.

Eleven more special flights arranged by civilian airlines with more than 2,200 Indians from Ukraine's neighboring countries are also expected to arrive in India on Saturday. In addition, four C-17 military aircraft flew again on Saturday to pick up Indian citizens in Romania, Poland and Slovakia.

India began evacuating its citizens from Ukraine's neighboring countries on February 26, the evacuation operation was dubbed Ganga. Initially, the flights were organized only by civilian airlines, but since Wednesday, military transport planes of the Indian Air Force have joined the operation Ganga. More than 10,300 Indians, mostly students, who left Ukrainian territory were returned during the operation Ganga, Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi said Friday.

Altogether, according to initial estimates, there were about 20,000 Indians in Ukraine. It has now become clear that the number of Indian citizens who were in Ukraine is higher than previously estimated, as not everyone was registered at the embassy.
